DHS Announces $17.1 Million Award for Cargo Security Program

The Department of Homeland Security announced a $17.1 million award to the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey and to the Ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach and Seattle/Tacoma to strengthen the security of container cargo moving through three of the nation’s largest load centers.

Crime Fighting Goes High-Tech

The Chesterfield Police Department in Michigan has purchased TACNET, a high-tech system that allows police officers to use voice commands to activate numerous functions, including radios, license plate checks, radar, flashing lights, and sirens. The equipment is operated through a computerized dashboard-mounted liquid crystal display unit that is as small as a laptop computer screen. One of TACNET's more prominent features is that officers can communicate with up to five departments or outlets at once, via the system's five radio systems. Congressman Questions No-Bid Contract

Congressman Bennie G. Thompson, Ranking Member of the House Homeland Security Committee, questioned assertions that the Department of Homeland Security granted a no-bid contract to train intelligence analysts to Mercyhurst College, an Erie, Pennsylvania college with close ties to former Secretary Tom Ridge.
