States Push for More Road Money

Federal highway funding isn't always fair. Twenty states collectively paid $1.8 billion more into a national highway fund than they got back for road and bridge projects in 2003, according to the most recent federal data available. Now these states and their U.S. representatives want to assure they get more of their federal gasoline taxes back.

City Earns Public Works Project Award

The City of Golden, CO, was recently honored by the American Public Works Association (APWA) Colorado Chapter with the Public Works Project Award for its Asset Management System for General Public Works in a Small Community.

Leveraged Purchasing Power is Not Just for States

As local governments struggle to stretch their budgets, they are also affected by challenges from the federal and state governments. Budget cuts at the federal level continue to reduce aid to state governments. States then pass some of those cuts in aid on to their major cities and municipalities. Study Reveals Top 150 Federal IT Contractors for FY04

Over 73 percent of the $50 billion in information technology spending went to the top 150 federal contractors. The first and only list of the top 150 federal contractors based on information technology (IT) spending in fiscal year 2004 (FY04) was released by INPUT, a provider of government market intelligence. The contractors on the 2005 INPUT Federal IT 150 received more than $36 billion of the overall $50 billion spent by the federal government in FY04. Over $17 billion went to the top ten contractors on the list.

Ten New Sites Added to Superfund List

A Pennsylvania battery recycling plant, a South Carolina gold mine, and an Illinois zinc smelter are among 10 new sites just added to the National Priorities List of Superfund sites by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The sites were selected because of their degree of risk to human health and the environment.
