News

Border Patrol Links to FBI Records

The federal government has supplied electronic fingerprint readers and software to all 136 Border Patrol stations nationwide and about one-third of the country's ports of entry to allow personnel to access FBI records within minutes. The system was installed from Oct. 1, 2003 to Aug. 31, 2004, during which time Border Patrol arrested 8,005 criminal suspects attempting to come into the United States. According to Robert C. Bonner, commissioner of Customs and Border Patrol, none of the arrests were related to terrorism, but were related to crimes such as murder, kidnapping, assault, sexual assault, robbery, and drugs. New York to Adopt Aggressive Renewables Standard

The New York State Public Service Commission voted to adopt a renewable energy policy designed to increase the proportion of renewable-generated electricity sold to consumers in the state to at least 25 percent by 2013. The new Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) program would entail the addition of approximately 3,700 megawatts of renewable capacity. By 2013, the program would reduce air emissions statewide by an estimated 6.8 percent for nitrogen oxides (NOx), 5.9 percent for sulfur dioxide (SO2), and 7.7 percent for carbon dioxide (CO2).

The program, to be funded by a surcharge on consumers' electric bills, will consist of two tiers of eligible resources: a 'main tier' consisting of medium-to-large-scale electric generation facilities, and a 'customer-sited tier' consisting of smaller, on-site technologies such as fuel cells, photovoltaic installations, or wind generators. Rolex Rangers Ride Again

Trading in suits and ties for riding gear, Barry West, chief information officer for the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and Marc Zoellner, vice president of ICF Consulting, are continuing the tradition they began last year known as the Rolex Rangers Ride. The two will be joined by other Rangers--all government information technology (IT) professionals--as the group embarks on its journey to this year's Industry Advisory Council's (IAC) Executive Leadership Conference (ELC), October 24-26 in Hershey, PA, via their transportation vehicles of choice--Harley-Davidsons.

Various IT industry leaders and government executives will converge at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 23rd at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner, 7920 Jones Branch Road in McLean, Va. After breakfast and a pre-ride briefing, the Rangers will set out on their journey at 9:00 a.m., which includes a detour for lunch at Battlefield Harley in Gettysburg, Pa. The Rangers expect to reach Hershey by 3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

Erie Researchers Study Radar Security for Great Lakes

The Center for eBusiness & Advanced Information Technology Prsident Susan Breon finds that the Great Lakes borders are weak spots in nation security. The agency is looking into whether ships could be effectively tracked on the waterways with low-cost commercial radar. The first phase of testing will be accomplished by the agency and researchers from Penn State-Behrend and Mercyhurst College with a $50,00 seed grant.
