CISO Study Reveals Software Quality Concerns

According to a recent study, Federal Chief Information Security Officers (CISO) ranked patch management as their number-one security concern --pointing directly to significant issues with commercial software quality. The study highlights cyber attack preparedness, Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) compliance, and network compromise among major concerns that keep CISOs up at night.

Grant to Fund First Responder Radio Technology

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) has awarded a grant for the development of a new radio system capable of reliably transmitting data from first responders inside a burning building to the commander and rescue team outside.

With the assistance of the NSF grant, Garfield Heights, Ohio-based Audiopack Technologies will develop a working prototype of a new communications system using ad-hoc or mesh-networked radios in which each first responder's radio acts as a network node. If a transmission fails to reach the incident commander outside, it is automatically re-routed through other nodes in the network until it reaches its ultimate destination. Driven by sophisticated network software, the system self-heals in the event one or more nodes are eliminated. Nodes also can be placed inside doorways or windows to serve as repeaters between the commander outside and firefighters inside. For more information about Audiopack, visit: www.audiopack.com.

Fort Bragg Tests Scanner System for Visitor Security

A security system that gleans information from drivers' licenses via bar code scanners is being tested at two post gates at Fort Bragg, NC. The information will be fed to databases containing the names of people prohibited from post and those who have had their on-post driving rights revoked. Exposing the civil security force to the technology, gauging how long the processing of people through the gates takes, and discovering how many people are improperly trying to get into Fort Bragg are among the agendas of the three-month trial. Program Encourages Electrically Powered Irrigation Pumps

The California Air Resources Board (ARB) applauds the new program proposed by the Agricultural Energy Consumers Association (AECA), Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) and Southern California Edison (SCE) encouraging Central Valley farmers to convert diesel-powered water irrigation pumps to electric.

The new program proposes to offer an "incentive" rate for farmers who voluntarily convert diesel-engine-powered agricultural pumps to electric. In addition to the incentive rate, eligible customers would be provided with an enhanced "line extension", or hook-up allowance, that is based on the air quality benefits achieved, designed to help defray the costs of the initial conversion to electricity. Program participants would be required to destroy their older diesel engines, and newer "cleaner" diesel engines would be turned over to the local air district for reuse or proper disposal.

IAC Calls For Excellence.Gov Nominations

The Industry Advisory Council (IAC) e-Government Shared Interest Group (SIG) announced a call for nominations for its fifth annual Excellence.Gov Awards program. Nominations are open through December 17, 2004.
