Voice Commands Steer "Smart Cruisers"

The University of New Hampshire's Consolidated Advanced Technologies Laboratory (CATlab) is teaming up with state and federal agencies to develop intelligent police cars. Under Project54, CATlab works with the New Hampshire Department of Safety, funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, to help officers control various functions through voice commands. For example, officers can verbally ask for vehicular data or a driver's history, and can make National Crime Information Center or FBI queries. These requests can be handled through data radios, a cellular digital packet data (CDPD) connection, or through a database located in the car. Currently, the technology is only available to departments in New Hampshire. Source: National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC). Traffic Gridlock Extends Its Grip on U.S. Drivers

Many commuters will not be surprised to learn that American cities are not just failing to catch up with the effects of traffic congestion, they are falling further behind each year. And drivers waste an annual total of 5.6 billion gallons of fuel as their engines idle in traffic jams, according to the 2004 Urban Mobility Report, published by the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M University.

Using data from federal, state, and local agencies to develop estimates of congestion and mobility within urban areas, the report shows traffic congestion growing across the nation in cities of all sizes, consuming more hours of the day, and affecting more travelers and more shipments of goods than ever before. Drivers should expect more of the same, the study's authors said. Source: Environmental News Service (ENS).
