Mud-to-Parks Project Begins in Illinois River
Illinois Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn, Congressman Ray LaHood (R-Peoria), Chicago Park District General Superintendent Timothy J. Mitchell, and others celebrated the first scoop of sediment dredged from the Illinois River at Peoria Lake destined for Chicago as part of the innovative "Mud-to-Parks" project.
Through the Mud-to-Parks project, 105,000 tons of sediment will be dredged from Peoria Lake, loaded onto 70 barges and shipped 163 miles up the Illinois River to Chicago's old U.S. Steel South Works facility, now a slag-covered site devoid of life. There, it will be unloaded and spread atop the slag, covering 17 acres to a depth of 2-3 feet. Native grasses will be planted and the rich, fertile sediment will soon turn into a green park on the Lake Michigan shore.

To understand a complex problem, simple tools can help. For instance, try reducing the problem to its simplest parts. By understanding the parts and how they interact, one can then construct a solution. Our daily lives can be filled with problems, both at home and at work. In general, most work undertaken attempts to solve problems or find better ways of meeting pre-determined goals. One easy way to achieve a goal is to structure the solution in the form of a project.

Database Connects Naval Needs With Industry Opportunities
The West Virginia High Technology Consortium (WVHTC) Foundation has developed a Web-based system that alerts government laboratories and industry of technology needs and opportunities identified by the U.S. Navy. The system is known as Navy TechMatch, WVHTC Foundation officials announced.
Navy TechMatch is designed to help industry, academia, and other government sectors work more effectively with the Naval community. Registered users receive free e-mail notifications of the Naval needs, opportunities, and events based on keywords in a particular area of interest. The system provides searchable Naval patents available for licensing, Naval facilities available for commercial use and an avenue for submitting innovative solutions to Naval technology needs. Visit:

Over the next two years, research funded by Alaska Sea Grant will help scientists determine how electronic noses (e-noses) might be used to boost seafood quality in Alaska's processing plants. According to lead researcher Alexandra Oliveira of the Fishery Industrial Technology Center in Kodiak, inspectors commonly use their noses to help evaluate seafood quality. "The electronic nose is a technology that is fairly new to the seafood industry," she said. "We are trying to bring this sophisticated tool directly to the processing plant."
Used in such applications as sniffing out landmines, detecting contraband drugs, and seeking chemical and biological weapons, e-noses have chemical sensors that take the place of nasal receptors and microprocessors that interpret data. It is hoped that by providing vapor profiles for fresh and not-so-fresh fish, e-noses could give a fast, unbiased quality check that would improve Alaska's seafood and increase the industry's ability to compete in world markets.
